Rustic Framing with a Contemporary Aesthetic
Many of the places we build combine traditional building techniques with modern amenities. We designed and built this custom personal retreat and guest house using a combination of vintage and contemporary materials. The result is a comfortable, energy efficient place to get away from it all.
Goal: Relax and Unwind
The clients were a couple originally from Sweden who had already built a home on the site. The husband, a businessman, wanted a place where he could relax and unwind. To create such a place, we built a small house with many of the amenities that would be found in a Swedish guest house.
A Rustic Frame with Modern Conveniences
To frame the Getaway, an old barn was disassembled and transported it to the site. Around that structure, we built a stick built shell, giving us space for insulation that provides the energy efficiency and quietness we desired.
Inside, the exposed timbers create a rustic feel. We added a number of conveniences to provide comfort and warmth, including a wood stove, a cedar sauna, a hot tub, and a wet bar. Two loft beds allow the Getaway to be used as a guest house. The building’s location contributes to the sense of comfort. Set in the woods away from the main house, it feels like a world of its own.
